During the 1980s, its GDP grew at a remarkable rate of 8.5% for 10 years.Vietnam is a leading agricultural exporter and has been attracting heavy amounts of foriegn investments lately, thanks to it’s large population and growing market size.Thailand’s nominal GDP stands at 437 billion USD (26th spot) compared to Vietnam’s 215 billion-USD-economy which gives it the 46th spot. The difference in the per capita incomes is much more stark; an average of 6,288$ per capita in Thailand against 2,870$ in Vietnam is a testament to the higher living standards in the democratic kingdom.The Thai currency Baht is stronger than Vietnamese Dong. A single dollar equals 34 Baht; and the same dollar trades for over 22 thousand Vietnamese Dongs!Thailand is the second most visited country in Asia (after China), which contributes to 7.5 % of its GDP. Vietnam has started to make its mark in the tourist sector, but overtaking Thailand to become the premier tourist destination in South East Asia could be a Herculean task.Thailand is listed as one of the NICs (newly industrialized countries). Vietnam is in the list of Next Eleven (the eleven emerging economies along with the BRIC nations expected to dominate world market in the 21st century).Both these countries had their fare shares of industrialization, and by the virtue of starting it a little earlier, Thailand has had remained much further developed than Vietnam. But with greater living standards, Thailand has lost foriegn investments which fled to Vietnam, owing to its lower labor and production costs.
